Main Story. 11. 10.
For more than 160 years, Mammut has stood as a benchmark in the world of mountain sports. From pioneering climbing ropes to outfitting elite athletes, the Swiss brand’s evolution has been defined by its unwavering commitment to alpine excellence. Along the way, Polartec® has been by their side, providing the Mammut team with best-in-class textile technologies to deliver a full spectrum of breathable, durable, and sustainable performance for alpine athletes. The legacy continues with a new layering system developed in close collaboration with elite mountaineers and designed to excel in the most technical and unforgiving environments. Crafted with cutting-edge Polartec® fabrics and built for high-octane alpine pursuits, the award-winning collection delivers the warmth, breathability, protection, and freedom to move for all those times when compromise isn’t an option.
“Polartec is more than a fabric supplier, they’re a strategic partner in innovation. Their technologies help us turn ambitious design concepts into reality, enabling climbers to go further, faster, and safer in the world’s most demanding environments.” –
Alfred Stoppacher, Eiger & Innovation Lead for Mammut
The Eiger Extreme 6.0 system was developed with a focus on resourceful performance and is designed to maximize innovative functionality while reducing environmental impact. Every component is engineered to excel in demanding alpine conditions, with an emphasis on long-lasting durability, repairability, and the use of lower-impact materials such as recycled and biobased fibers.
The result? A modular solution that redefines what premium mountaineering apparel can achieve. From next-to-skin base layers made with moisture-wicking Polartec® Power Dry™ and Polartec® Power Grid™, to the high-performance protection of Polartec® Power Sheild™ Pro, the resilient stretch of Polartec® Power Stretch™ Pro and the packable warmth of Polartec® Alpha™ active insulation, every layer works in harmony with the one before it. More importantly, each piece features a combination of Polartec® fabrics that have been carefully selected for their ability to regulate body temperature, manage moisture, protect against the elements, and move effortlessly with the athlete.
In designing the new Eiger Extreme collection, Mammut has expertly integrated multiple Polartec textile technologies to achieve total system efficiency. Across the entire collection, each material ensures optimal functionality, delivering warmth without weight, protection without restriction, and breathability without compromise. This seamless interplay means fewer layers are needed, reducing both bulk and complexity. The garments are lighter, more responsive, and better equipped to adapt to the body’s needs across altitude, exertion, and weather shifts. For high-output alpinism, this lets climbers stay focused and mobile without the distraction of constant layering adjustments.
The Eiger Nordwand FL Air Mesh Vest excels during cold, aerobic activity. It’s crafted from custom-developed Polartec® Alpha™ Polypropylene mesh, a lightweight, next-to-skin insulator that helps ensure the vest won’t pick up a lot of moisture while dynamically regulating body temperature for optimal warmth without the bulk. As if this wasn’t good enough, the polypropylene structure gives the vest quick drying properties, while the elastic Polartec® Power Grid™ bindings enhance comfort and reduce chafing. Just ask professional alpinist and climber Jonas Schild, who has successfully sent the Gondo Crack (8c/5.14b) in Switzerland, Le Voyage (8b+/5.14a) in Annot, France and Greenspit (8b+/5.14a) in Valle dell’Orco, Italy. Jonas says that when it comes to winter mountaineering, this Mammut vest is the best base layer he’s ever had because its mesh technology ensures temperature regulation in all conditions.
The Eiger Nordwand Advanced FL Half Zip Hoodie and Pull are highly versatile first layer pieces designed for alpine use across a range of activities and conditions. Made with lightweight Polartec® Power Grid™, their grid construction optimizes warmth, breathability, and moisture transport, making them ideal as a base layer in winter or a standalone layer in milder conditions. When temperatures drop, they can be seamlessly layered to maintain breathable warmth without bulk.
Looking for a technical midlayer for colder, high-output missions? The Eiger Nordwand Advanced ML Jacket and Hoodie are perfect for alpine athletes who demand breathability, durability, and freedom of movement but still need to stay warm. Built from a strategic combination of custom developed Polartec® Power Stretch™ Pro, made from post-consumer recycled nylon to ensure warmth, 4-way stretch and abrasion resistance, and Polartec® Power Dry™ Mesh treated with Polartec® Fresh Face, a plant-based, metal-free technology that reduces unpleasant odors, to provide better air flow in high-perspiration zones for extra ventilation and faster drying.
Protection in the high alpine can’t come at the cost of breathability or agility, which is why Mammut designed a weatherproof mountaineering softshell jacket and pants. Yes, you read that right. SOFT. The Nordwand Pro SO Hooded Jacket and Pants, crafted with Polartec® Power Shield™ Pro, a biobased 3-layer fabric featuring a non-PFAS waterproof, windproof and breathable finish, offers the comfort and stretch of a softshell with the performance of a hardshell. This means alpinists stay dry without overheating and can keep moving when the weather turns – all while enjoying stretch and durability worthy of the Eiger North Face.
In extreme environments, every gram matters. Bulky layers and constant adjustments cost energy, time, and focus, which are luxuries an alpine athlete can’t afford. Mammut uses high-efficiency materials that reduce complexity while maximizing performance, a streamlined approach that is key to its design philosophy. Fewer pieces, fewer transitions, greater flow. The result is a system that adapts with the athlete, rather than the other way around. Even the smallest details, like soft next-to-skin interiors and silent face fabrics, speak to the rigorous demands of the high alpine. Because in the mountains, performance is measured in real-time, moment by moment.
